We’ve got big mutts and we cannot lie… The large numbers of large dogs mean there’s a growing kennel space issue at Denver Animal Shelter (DAS).

So, we want to move these larger dogs out of the shelter and into loving homes as quickly as possible. We are offering a dog-gone great deal on these huge hounds, over 30 pounds, starting on June 20 through July 20. Any dog, 30 pounds and over, is just $30. Regular adoption fees range from $100 to $170, depending on the dog’s age. All adoptions come with spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, microchip and a one-year pet license.

“We are concerned since our animal numbers continue to grow and we know it will only get worse. The Fourth of July is our busiest day, and the following week is our busiest week of the year for strays coming into the shelter. We want to make room for all the animals that will need help,” says DAP Director Melanie Sobel.

To encourage our community’s adoption of big dogs, we came up with a Top 5 list of their attributes.

• Big dogs give big love (You’ll never be deficient in sloppy, wet kisses ever again).
• Big dogs are a crime deterrent (Ain’t no one gonna mess with you with a sizeable companion by your side).
• Big dogs are protectors (That fluffy purse dog is more about looking cute, right?).
• Big dogs are great exercise partners (And they’ll put you through the ringer just like a real trainer).
• Big dogs make you look small (Forget wearing vertical stripes or black, a big dog is the ultimate slimming accessory).

Of course, we also love small dogs. But small dogs get adopted quicker and don’t need as much of our help. If you’ve been thinking of adopting your next pet or your first pet, the timing couldn’t be better.

DAS is located at 1241 W. Bayaud Ave. and is open Monday-Friday, 11:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
