Rep. Diana DeGette, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Colorado's 1st district, expressed concerns on February 3, 2025, regarding the involvement of Elon Musk in governmental affairs and access to sensitive information. DeGette, who has been a member of Congress since 1997 after replacing Pat Schroeder, shared her views through a series of tweets.
In her first tweet on February 3, DeGette emphasized the importance of USAID in promoting U.S. national security interests and providing humanitarian aid. She criticized Elon Musk as "an unelected billionaire with no authority to make these decisions," asserting that such actions equate to authoritarianism. "USAID is critical in advancing U.S. national security interests, providing humanitarian aid, and strengthening global stability. Musk is an unelected billionaire with no authority to make these decisions."
In another tweet posted shortly after, DeGette voiced her opposition to allowing billionaires access to sensitive government information under Trump's administration. She stated she would not remain passive while the government is handed over to wealthy individuals. "We cannot allow an unelected billionaire to access this sensitive information, and I will not stand idly by while Trump hands over our government to the wealthiest individuals in our country."
Additionally, DeGette highlighted concerns about Elon Musk's ability to access millions of Americans' Social Security and payment information. She questioned whom this benefits and noted it does not assist families struggling financially."Elon Musk can now access millions of Americans’ Social Security and payment info."
