Mayor Michael B. Hancock today thanked the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for awarding Denver an additional $8.6 million to assist with the city’s migrant sheltering response.

“I’m thrilled that Homeland Security has granted Denver more funding to cover a portion of the nearly $18 million the city has spent responding to the migrant influx since December,” Mayor Hancock said. “I want to thank Secretary Mayorkas for listening to our calls for support, as well as Sens. Bennet and Hickenlooper and Congresswoman DeGette for their tireless advocacy to secure these much-needed funds.

“We’ve mounted an unprecedented response to this humanitarian crisis over the last seven months, and we look forward to continued conversations with the Biden-Harris Administration about additional assistance.”

These funds are in addition to an earlier federal award of $909,000. As of today, Denver has sheltered and supported 11,401 migrants from the southern border at a cost of more than $17.8 million. The city is currently covering costs using contingency funds and agency budgets.
