DENVER – The City and County of Denver will demobilize the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and Joint Information Center (JIC) on Friday, June 9, facilitating the management of migrant sheltering support. The incident will be transitioned to the Denver Department of Human Services to manage the incident moving forward.

The city’s EOC was reactivated on May 11, 2023, to manage a very large number of migrants arriving from the southern border prior to the expiration of the COVID-era Title 42 policy. Since that time, the city has built up capacity to the greatest extent possible to mitigate the chances of reaching emergent levels. Additionally, the influx of migrants has reached a manageable level lessening the need for emergent operations to continue.

"Denver is a welcoming city, and we continue to do everything we can to support the people affected by this humanitarian crisis,” Mayor Michael B. Hancock said. “Thanks to the work in the EOC over the past six weeks, we remain prepared for possible future influxes.”

Arriving migrants will continue to be welcomed at the city’s Reception Center between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., seven days per week.

As of Friday, June 9, Denver has sheltered and supported over 11,200 migrants from the southern boarder at a cost of more than $17.8 million. The city is currently covering costs using contingency funds and agency budgets, which is not sustainable in the long-term without impacting city services. The only funding the city has received so far to support the migrant sheltering operations is a reimbursement award of $3.5 million from the State of Colorado. The federal government has provided $909,000 to Denver and $250,000 to Colorado.
