The City and County of Denver today re-activated the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and Joint Information Center (JIC) to ensure enhanced coordination and management of resources to better meet the needs of the significantly increasing number of migrant arrivals in our city.
“Our city continues to do everything we can to respond to this humanitarian crisis,” Mayor Michael B. Hancock said. “But we cannot keep shouldering this burden alone. We’re sending out a distress signal: we need our federal and congressional leaders to hear it and respond.”
Since December, the city has spent nearly $16 million and served over 9,000 migrants. Each night over the past five months, Denver has sheltered between 400 to 2,000 migrant guests.
Over the past several days, Denver has seen a significant increase in the number of migrants arriving from the southern border of the United States. Earlier this week, nearly 400 migrants arrived in one day, far eclipsing what the 20-30 arrivals per day for much of March and April. As Title 42 expires today, it is expected the numbers of arriving migrants will continue to grow.
To accommodate this increase, the city’s Reception Center transitioned to a city-owned facility effective 8 a.m. today. Hours of operations will be 7-days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and city operations will continue as usual.
Currently, there are more than 1,000 migrants in five temporary shelters operating in Denver. Denver is working to expand its resources as quickly as possible and has been in close coordination with the state of Colorado for assistance with this crisis.
With the sharp increase in migrant arrivals this week, the shelters are nearing capacity, and the city is calling on community partners, including non-profits, churches and other organizations, to provide assistance with shelters, donations and other aid. Interested organizations should visit Denvergov.org/MigrantSupport and click the “Sign Up to Help Migrants in Denver” button.
For the those wishing to donate clothing and are other items, two organizations are supporting that effort:
- The Denver Dream Center (2165 Curtis St, Denver, CO, 80205) will be the primary site effective Wednesday, May 17. For more information on the Denver Dream Center donation site, visit the website or contact info@denverdc.org.
- The Potters House of Denver (9495 E Florida Ave, Denver, CO, 80247) will start accepting only coordinated drop-offs on Monday, May 22. To coordinate a drop off, please contact donations@denvergov.org. Any item not previously coordinated for drop off, will not be accepted.

- Number of Migrants Sheltered in Partner Emergency Shelters (as of 5/11/23 at noon): 878
