Hancock says city resources 'on the verge of reaching a breaking point at this time' amid wave of migrants

Amid an influx of migrants into the city, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock has been sounding the alarm about the challenges the migrants could have on local resources.

The Colorado Sun reported Dec. 12 that 247 migrants arrived in Denver, just days after about 100 had arrived in the Mile High City.

“Let me be frank: This influx of migrants, the unanticipated nature of their arrival, and our current space and staffing challenges have put an immense strain on city resources, to the level where they’re on the verge of reaching a breaking point at this time,” Hancock said in a statement on Thursday.

Hancock commented on migrant issues for the second time in a week, issuing a statement on Twitter on Dec. 7 after the first wave of migrants arrived in the city.

"Many of you are aware that roughly 100 asylum-seekers and refugees arrived in our city yesterday,” he said on Twitter. “City staff and our network of compassionate service-provider partners worked swiftly to set up an emergency shelter to meet their immediate needs last night.”
