The City and County of Denver encourage the community to adopt pets.
In October, during the National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, residents were encouraged to adopt pets through Denver Animal Shelter (DAS). After last month's event, DAS is having a pet adoption event Friday.
"On Friday, Nov. 25, DAS is hosting a Black FURday pet adoption event. Any dog or cat with any amount of black fur is just $20," the city announced. "Regular adoption fees range from $65 to $170. You heard that right, if you find a speck of black on any adoptable cat or dog, you can take that pet home for the low, low price of $20!"
The shelter is a government open-admission full-service animal shelter that is currently reaching its full capacity. DAS said that there are some animals that don't do well in shelters and would need a home.
"Contrary to what people think and have heard, adoption rates did not go through the roof,” Meghan Dillmore, the shelter service manager for Denver Animal Shelter, told Westword. “Fewer people were surrendering their pets, and there were fewer strays. So that, more than anything, was the reason for our lower population during 2020.”
DAS, operated by Denver Animal Protection (DAP), has up to 6,000 animals in need, according to the city's website.
DAP strives to provide humane care to companion animals; reunite wayward pets with their owners and find loving homes for pets. It also enforces the county's animal ordinances and serves as an educational resource for community members.
The animal shelter is located at 1241 W. Bayaud Ave., in Denver. It is open Monday through Friday 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and on weekends from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
