The City of Denver invites everyone to patronize local Latino-owned restaurants, breweries, stores and arts and cultural institutions during Hispanic Heritage Month.

"This Hispanic Heritage Month is a perfect time to support local Latino/Latina-owned restaurants, breweries, retail and arts and culture centers,” the City and County of Denver stated in a tweet.

The commemoration occurs each year on Sept. 15, the anniversary of the independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. During this time, Mexico, Chile and Belize also celebrate their independence days, according to hispanicheritagemonth.gov

President Lyndon B. Johnson established Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968, which President Ronald Reagan expanded in 1988 to encompass a 30-day period beginning on Sept. 15 and concluding on Oct. 15. It became a law on Aug. 17, 1988, with the passage of Public Law 100-402.

9NEWS recognized Latino-owned and managed companies around the Denver metro region in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month and has shared a map of restaurants, breweries, groceries, art and culture and other establishments. The public is invited to recommend a business to be added to the map by filling out a form that they would verify prior to publishing on the map.

Denver.org shared its own list of activities to participate in, including interactive outdoor art, Hispanic Restaurant week (Sept. 22-Oct. 3), concerts and performances.
