Free gun locks were recently given away by the Denver Police Department (DPD) in collaboration with its partners in youth violence prevention.

The Denver Public Safety Department invited the public to join the event Saturday, Dec. 17.

"Denver gun owners, this Saturday join @DenverPoliceDept and partners in youth violence prevention for a FREE gun lock giveaway event hosted at five locations around the city!" the Denver Public Safety Department announced on Twitter. "Participants will receive a free gun lock, safety tips and other resources – no questions asked."

The event was on Dec. 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at five locations across the city, KDVR reported. The giveaway was held at Barnum Rec Center: 360 N. Hooker St., La Alma Rec Center: 1325 W. 11th Ave., Hiawatha Davis Rec Center: 3334 N. Holly St., Montbello Rec Center: 15555 E. 53rd Ave. and Montclair Recreation Center: N. 729 Ulster Way.

“Gun-owning residents are encouraged to come to the event where they will receive a free gun lock, safety tips and other resources! #Denver," DPD tweeted

According to KDVR, Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas and violence prevention advocates stressed the importance of safe firearm storage at an event at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 16 at the La Alma Rec Center in the wake of accidental shootings in Denver.

Thomas noted that “unsecured firearms can fall into the hands of people that should not have access to them.”

In October, KDVR reported on the most commonly stolen guns in the Denver area, and that nearly 1,000 firearms were stolen between January 2021 and July 2022.
