The Denver Art Museum (DAM) is set to showcase "Confluence of Nature: Nancy Hemenway Barton," an exhibition featuring twelve textile wall sculptures and five works on paper by the artist Nancy Hemenway Barton. This exhibition will be open from February 16, 2025, through October 8, 2025, in the Textile Arts & Fashion galleries on level six of the Martin Building. The exhibition is included with general admission.
“We couldn’t be prouder to bring the incredible work of Nancy Hemenway to the DAM for the very first time,” stated Christoph Heinrich, Frederick and Jan Mayer Director of the Denver Art Museum. “Our visitors will enjoy the chance to explore the stunning locations around the world that informed Hemenway’s artistic process.”
Hemenway's work is influenced by her experiences in different regions, including Mexico and Bolivia. Her time in Bolivia inspired her series "Bayetage," which blends handwoven lambswool and collage techniques. After returning to the United States in 1972, she created works reflecting nature's dynamic qualities.
Her series "Aqua Lapis" explores water and stone as sources of inspiration. During this period, she prepared for a major solo exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1983. She remarked on rocks' strength and beauty: “Rocks have no gender for all their strength and beauty, but almost all that is glorious in nature if it has gender is feminine.”
In "New England Light," Hemenway captures vibrant colors inspired by sailing experiences in Maine. This series marked a shift towards bold shapes and vivid hues.
In her later years, her work took on an architectural form with free-standing sculptures like "Thaw." Despite being diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease late in life, she continued creating art until her passing.
The exhibition was organized by DAM with support from Avenir Institute of Textile Arts and Fashion, Lula Faye Fiber, donors to the Annual Fund Leadership Campaign, SCFD residents, 5280 Magazine, and CBS Colorado.
For planning visits to DAM, details about ticket pricing and public transit are available online. Museum members enjoy free general admission daily while youth aged 18 and under receive free entry thanks to DAM’s Free for Kids program.
