Denver – Tuesday, June 13, 2023 – On June 13 in the afternoon, at 2:56 p.m., the Denver Police Department received a report of a shooting that occurred in the northbound lanes of I-25 between West 6th Avenue and West 8th Avenue. When officers arrived, they located an adult male on the shoulder of the road suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was assessed by paramedics and was pronounced deceased at the scene. A second adult male shooting victim was located on the offramp from northbound I-25 to West 8th Avenue. This victim was transported to the hospital where he later died.

Through the investigation it was learned that a road rage incident occurred between the victims who were travelling together in one vehicle and the driver of another vehicle near northbound I-25 and Alameda Avenue. It appears the driver of the victim vehicle stopped in the right lane of traffic on northbound I-25 directly underneath West 6th Avenue. The passenger exited that vehicle and approached the driver of the suspect vehicle who also stopped on the highway. While the extent of the confrontation between the two is still under investigation, it appears the suspect pulled out a firearm and fatally shot the victim.

Then, the driver of the victim vehicle exited the car and approached the suspect who was still in his vehicle. The suspect began driving away and the second victim grabbed onto the vehicle. The driver exited the highway at West 8th Avenue and fired multiple shots, striking the second victim and causing him to fall from the vehicle.

When the shooting occurred, an on-duty Denver Police detective was driving on the highway and heard the gunshots. He observed the associated vehicle continue traveling and followed the driver while coordinating with uniformed patrol officers to contact the driver. A traffic stop was conducted near West 13th Avenue and North Meade Street where the driver was taken into custody without incident.

The suspect has been identified as 25-year-old Stephen Long. He is being held for investigation of two counts of First Degree Murder. Several witnesses have been interviewed as part of this investigation, however, anyone with information or dashcam video of this incident is encouraged to contact the Denver Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 720-913-STOP (7867).

The victims’ identities will be confirmed and released by the Office of the Medical Examiner. The Denver District Attorney’s office will make the final determination regarding possible charges in this case.
