The Denver Pioneers reported on May 4 that several former players made significant contributions during the opening weekend of the National Lacrosse League semifinals. The games featured strong performances from alumni representing teams including San Diego, Toronto, Halifax, and Georgia.
In the first game of the weekend, Wes Berg recorded seven assists for San Diego. However, Mark Matthews secured a win for Toronto by breaking an 11-11 tie with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. Matthews completed his hat trick and finished with three goals as Toronto defeated San Diego 14-12. Josh Dawick added three assists for Toronto.
Halifax achieved the only road victory of the semifinals’ opening weekend by defeating Georgia 12-7. Richie Connell scored two goals for Georgia while Brendan Bomberry had two goals and six loose balls collected for Halifax. Casey Wilson contributed four points to Halifax’s effort.
San Diego responded on Sunday by forcing a third game in their series against Toronto after winning 11-6. Berg led San Diego with one goal and five assists.
Looking ahead, Game 2 between Georgia and Halifax is scheduled for Saturday, May 9 at 4 p.m., followed by Game 3 between San Diego and Toronto at 5 p.m.
