U.S. Representative Diana DeGette, who has represented Colorado’s 1st district since 1997, addressed several issues related to U.S. foreign policy and domestic politics in a series of tweets posted in early January 2026.
On January 3, DeGette commented on the legitimacy of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and criticized the idea of unilateral U.S. intervention, stating, “While Nicolas Maduro is certainly an illegitimate leader, the United States does not have the authority to unilaterally invade another country, capture its leader and his wife, and haul them to the United States. After repeated assurances from this administration that it was not”.
The following day, she reaffirmed her commitment to democratic values and opposition to former President Donald Trump’s political agenda. On January 4, DeGette wrote: “In 2026, I remain committed to defending our democracy and pushing back against Trump’s extreme authoritarian agenda.
Standing up for Denverites’ shared values means protecting the vulnerable, resisting RFK Jr. ‘s relentless attacks against science, and defending reproductive”.
On January 5, DeGette criticized both Trump and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., writing: “Trump and RFK Jr. aren’t just gambling with lives today—they’re sabotaging the future of American medicine. Researchers will abandon their work here rather than live under an administration hostile to science itself.”
DeGette has served as a member of Congress since succeeding Pat Schroeder in 1997 after previously serving in the Colorado House of Representatives from 1993 to 1997. She was born in Tachikawa, Japan in 1957 and currently resides in Denver at age 65. DeGette earned her undergraduate degree from Colorado College in 1979 before obtaining a law degree from New York University in 1982.
