U.S. Representative Diana DeGette, who has represented Colorado’s 1st district in Congress since 1997, posted a series of statements on her official social media account criticizing recent policy actions by former President Donald Trump and entrepreneur Elon Musk regarding HIV/AIDS funding and immigration.
On December 1, 2025, DeGette wrote: “Earlier this year, Donald Trump, with the help of Elon Musk, gutted worldwide HIV/AIDS funding. These cuts came as roughly 1.3 million people across the globe became newly infected in 2024 and over 600,000 people died. Now for the first time in 44 years, the United States”.
The following day, she addressed recent developments concerning U.S. immigration policy after a shooting incident: “Trump is exploiting last week’s shooting to do what he’s wanted since day one: shut down asylum, block refugees, revoke green cards, and target immigrants from countries he doesn’t like. This is racist, un-American, and illegal. International law and federal courts protect” (December 2, 2025).
In a subsequent post on December 2, DeGette offered assistance to those affected by changes in immigration policies: “If you or your family are affected by Trump’s actions on asylum, refugee resettlement, Special Immigrant Visas, green cards, or other immigration policies, my office is here to help. You can call my District Office at (303) 844-4988 or visit my website: https://t.co/2x1yefQNOs”.
DeGette has been active in public service for decades; before joining Congress in 1997—succeeding Pat Schroeder—she served in the Colorado House of Representatives from 1993 to 1997. Born in Tachikawa, Japan in 1957 and currently residing in Denver at age 65, DeGette holds a BA from Colorado College (1979) and a JD from New York University (1982).
