U.S. Representative Diana DeGette, who has represented Colorado’s 1st district in Congress since 1997, addressed several national and local policy concerns on May 5, 2026, through a series of posts on her official Twitter account.
In her first tweet of the day, DeGette commented on the impact of U.S. foreign policy on local communities: “Trump’s war with Iran is making life more expensive for families in Denver and across Colorado. I’m fighting to end this illegal and costly war immediately.” (May 5, 2026).
Later that evening, she focused on gun safety legislation in Colorado and criticized former President Donald Trump’s stance: “Denver’s gun safety laws help keep weapons of war off our streets. Colorado has seen horrific mass shootings in which rifles with large capacity magazines inflict devastating damage. Donald Trump is trying to make it easier to get these weapons, but Denver and Colorado will” (May 5, 2026).
DeGette also raised concerns about public health leadership under the current administration: “Under Donald Trump and RFK Jr.’s watch, this administration has replaced trusted career scientists and public health experts with anti-vax conspiracy theorists who spread fear about vaccines. Now it’s being reported they are hiding studies that show vaccines are safe. Their war” (May 5, 2026).
DeGette’s remarks reflect ongoing debates over U.S. military engagement abroad, gun control measures at the state level, and federal public health policies under different administrations.
Born in Tachikawa, Japan in 1957 and currently residing in Denver, DeGette has served as a member of Congress since replacing Pat Schroeder in 1997 after previously serving in the Colorado House of Representatives from 1993 to 1997. She holds a BA from Colorado College (1979) and a JD from New York University (1982).
