U.S. Representative Diana DeGette, who has represented Colorado’s 1st district in Congress since 1997, recently took to social media to express strong opposition to actions taken by the Trump administration and to mark the anniversary of the January 6 Capitol attack.
On January 6, 2026, DeGette criticized former President Donald Trump for recent federal decisions affecting Colorado children. In a post dated January 6, she stated: “Donald Trump’s decision to take federal benefits away from vulnerable children in Colorado is vindictive and illegal. I vehemently oppose his actions as he continues his pattern of political retribution against our state. This devastating freeze will take food from families”.
The following day, DeGette participated in an event marking five years since the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. She wrote on January 7: “Today, I stood with my colleagues in the House and Senate to mark the 5th anniversary of the January 6 insurrection and to thank the men and women of law enforcement who helped defend the Capitol that day.
I was in the gallery that day. I will never forget the terror I saw.”
Later on January 7, DeGette addressed concerns about healthcare for children in Colorado: “This administration is making wildly unreasonable demands of Denver Health and Children’s Hospital Colorado, forcing them to stop critical care for kids who need it. These threats put kids’ mental and physical health at risk — jeopardizing their ability to get the care they”.
DeGette has served as a member of Congress representing Colorado’s 1st District since replacing Pat Schroeder in 1997. Before her time in Congress, she was a member of the Colorado House of Representatives from 1993 to 1997. Born in Tachikawa, Japan in 1957, DeGette resides in Denver and holds degrees from Colorado College (BA) and New York University (JD).
