U.S. Representative Diana DeGette, who has represented Colorado’s 1st district in Congress since 1997, posted a series of tweets on October 1 and 2, 2025, addressing concerns about congressional procedure, partisanship, and federal funding for universities.
On October 1, DeGette commented on the delay in swearing in Adelita Grijalva and its impact on legislative proceedings. She wrote: “Once Adelita Grijalva is sworn in, she will be the 218th signature on the Epstein Files discharge petition. However, Speaker Johnson canceled votes this week and let the government shut down instead of swearing her in. What is he so afraid of?”
Later that day, DeGette addressed perceived partisan actions related to Senate representation across states: ” What do all these states have in common? Two Democratic senators. This is bare-knuckled partisanship and also blatantly illegal.” The tweet included a link to further information.
On October 2, DeGette responded to reports regarding former President Donald Trump’s proposed conditions for university funding: “Donald Trump is conditioning federal funding to universities on the signing of a loyalty pledge to his agenda. This reeks of authoritarianism, and the universities should reject this hostage-taking of their funding.”
DeGette has served as Colorado’s representative since succeeding Pat Schroeder in 1997 and previously held office in the Colorado House of Representatives from 1993 to 1997. Born in Tachikawa, Japan in 1957 and currently residing in Denver at age 65, she holds degrees from Colorado College (BA) and New York University (JD).
