U.S. Representative Diana DeGette, who has represented Colorado’s 1st district in Congress since 1997, recently used her social media platform to address a series of issues including reproductive rights and federal budget priorities.
On May 4, DeGette commented on a Supreme Court decision regarding access to abortion medication: “I’m relieved that the Supreme Court just paused a lower court order that would have prevented women across our country from receiving mifepristone—safe, effective, and FDA-approved abortion care—via telehealth. I will closely monitor the case as it proceeds, but this shows that”.
The following day, May 5, she addressed ongoing political efforts affecting reproductive healthcare access: “As Donald Trump and his extreme anti-choice allies continue their assault on reproductive freedom, I’m leading an amicus brief with over 250 Congressional Democrats to protect mifepristone access and FDA’s integrity. Mifepristone is a safe and effective FDA-approved medication”.
Later the same day, DeGette criticized Republican budget proposals: “$36.7 billion for immigration enforcement. $1 billion for Trump’s ballroom. These are Republicans’ top priorities for their latest budget stunt. I won’t vote for a dime for Trump’s cruel immigration agenda, nor for a ballroom that the American people overwhelmingly do not”.
DeGette has served in Congress since succeeding Pat Schroeder in 1997 and previously served in the Colorado House of Representatives from 1993 to 1997. She was born in Tachikawa, Japan in 1957 and currently resides in Denver at age 65. DeGette earned her BA from Colorado College in 1979 before obtaining a JD from New York University in 1982.
