U.S. Representative Diana DeGette, who has represented Colorado’s 1st district in Congress since 1997, posted a series of statements on social media in early October 2025 addressing the government shutdown, its impact on Colorado families, and recent developments in the Middle East.
On October 8, DeGette criticized Congressional Republicans for their role in the ongoing government shutdown, stating, “Congressional Republicans didn’t just shut down the government — they turned their backs on Americans’ health care. Here in Colorado, community health centers that serve low-income families are running out of federal funding because of GOP inaction. This is what their chaos”.
The following day, DeGette described her meeting with federal workers affected by the shutdown, writing on October 9, “Today, I met with federal workers to discuss how the GOP’s shutdown is hurting working families, as thousands of Coloradans are furloughed or working without pay. Their stories and dedication to service were a powerful reminder of what’s at stake—and why Republicans must come”.
On the same day, DeGette commented on international affairs, specifically the conflict between Israel and Hamas. She wrote, “The announced deal between Israel and Hamas is promising, and I hope it will lead to the end of this brutal conflict – with all the hostages released and massive humanitarian aid surged into Gaza. There is much work to do, but lasting peace in the region must be the goal.”
DeGette has served in Congress since 1997, succeeding Pat Schroeder, and previously held office in the Colorado House of Representatives from 1993 to 1997. She was born in Tachikawa, Japan in 1957 and currently resides in Denver. DeGette holds a BA from Colorado College and a JD from New York University.
