University of Denver women’s tennis players Louise Wikander and Claudia Martinez de Velasco have received the Summit League’s top weekly honors for their performances during the second week of the season. The Summit League announced on Tuesday that Wikander was named Singles Peak Performer of the Week, while she and Martinez de Velasco earned Doubles Peak Team of the Week.

Wikander moved to the No. 1 singles position for the first time in her career and secured a straight-sets win during Denver’s 6-1 victory over Seattle in the dual-season opener on January 23. She came back from being a break down, saved a set point to force a tiebreak, won it, and then quickly took control in the second set for a 6-2 win.

In doubles play, Wikander partnered with Martinez de Velasco at No. 2 doubles, clinching the doubles point with a 6-2 victory. The pair converted all four break points against their opponents’ serves.

This marks Wikander’s third Singles Peak Performer of the Week award and is also her third time earning Doubles Peak Team of the Week alongside Martinez de Velasco. In total, Wikander now holds six combined weekly Summit League awards, while Martinez de Velasco has five. These are the first weekly honors this season for Denver women’s tennis players.

Denver will continue its home schedule at Denver Tennis Park with matches against Miami (Ohio) on Saturday, January 31 at 1 p.m. MT and Colorado on Sunday, February 1 at 4 p.m. MT.
