The Denver Pioneers Nordic skiing team recently completed its winter training camp and participated in early season races in Alaska. The squad held camps in both Fairbanks and Anchorage, before competing in four days of U.S. SuperTour events at Kincaid Park, Anchorage.
Due to weather conditions, the initial races scheduled for December 6-7 were relocated from Fairbanks to Anchorage. Over a nine-day period, athletes took part in classic and freestyle sprints as well as 10-kilometer classic and freestyle interval starts.
Among the women’s competitors, sophomore Anna Stewart placed 13th in the classic sprints and finished 19th overall in the 10K freestyle event. Freshman Ruby Serrouya secured a top-five finish by placing fifth in the freestyle sprints. Serrouya also reached the podium multiple times within her age group (U20), finishing first among juniors in both the classic sprints and 10K freestyle, and taking second place in the 10K classic.
On the men’s side, Eemil Juntunen advanced to the semifinals of the freestyle sprints with an 11th-place finish. Other team members including Joe Graziadei, Krystof Zatloukal, Micah Steinberg, and alumni Elijah Weenig also competed across various events.
The team will now take a break for winter before returning after New Year’s for the U.S. Cross Country National Championships beginning January 4 in Lake Placid, New York. This competition will feature additional SuperTour events as well as mark the start of collegiate racing with the RMISA Invitational.
